Free Identity Theft Services from Washington Mutual

Most people I know pay for a credit monitoring service or for identity theft insurance on their home owner’s policy. Most of the time, people who actually have to suffer through id theft have to do all the leg work before this so-called coverage kicks in. So the question that comes up – why pay for it?

Simply open a Free Checking account with Washington Mutual and you will get identity theft services free as an account feature. Here are the details from WaMu’s website -

“If you are a WaMu consumer checking customer, you are automatically eligible for Free ID Theft Services.  The service provides:

  • Identity theft insurance up to $5,000 (with no deductible) to help offset certain identity theft related expenses, including legal fees, lost wages and expenses paid out of pocket in connection with the theft of your identity (see program materials for details).
  • Toll-free access to Identity Theft Recovery Specialists if you become a victim of identity theft.
  • Automatic coverage. There’s no need to enroll—you’re already covered if you have a personal checking account with us.”

Premium services that include credit monitoring are available for a fee but the free service, combined with you checking your credit reports annually (rolling 4-month cycle), is good enough for most people.
