If you plan to do some shopping at Foot Locker in the next 2-3 days thanks to their Friends & Family Sale, then don’t forget to get an additional 15% back on the net sale amount as cash back from Microsoft Live.
MS Live Foot Locker Cashback link
See my previous post on cash back on how to make this work.
There are several online merchants which give a commission to various web sites (middle men, basically) for steering customers to them. This is how it works -
1. You go to a website that offers this feature and log into your account
2. Click on the link for the store where you want to shop online
3. Go through your purchasing process as you would normally do
4. Check out and pay
This is the basic process and each individual middle man website will have more details. But once you do this correctly, the cash back amount will be reported into your account in a few days. Normally there is a waiting period (typically 60-90 days) before you can actually withdraw the money.
What do the middle men or aggregators get? They keep a portion of the commission and pass the rest to the customer. Some of the well known aggregators are Ebates and Microsoft Live. Microsoft has been the most aggressive of the lot by not retaining anything and passing everything to the customer. They are essentially trying to make people use the MS Live website (live.com) more often.
Here are some links to use -
Ebates – has a $5 signup bonus
Evreward.com – check here first to see which aggregator offers the highest cash back, then go through them

Most people I know pay for a credit monitoring service or for identity theft insurance on their home owner’s policy. Simply open a Free Checking account with Washington Mutual and you will get identity theft services free as an account feature. Here are the details from WaMu’s website -
“If you are a WaMu consumer checking customer, you are automatically eligible for Free ID Theft Services. The service provides:
Premium services that include credit monitoring are available for a fee but the free service, combined with you checking your credit reports annually (rolling 4-month cycle), is good enough for most people.

You can get other flavors as well but this is the best one in my opinion. These are also some of the better snack bars on the market with a very healthy 9 grams of fiber per bar, low in fat and not loaded with sugar. Definitely a superior option to anything a typical office vending machine can offer.

A pretty good deal for a machine that is normally sold around $50. By the way, you don’t have to buy Senseo pods to make coffee, there are at least a dozen other options available like Baronet, Green Mountain, Melitta, Emeril, Wolfgang Puck, etc.

Note the following – this can be done only in store. It may be a good idea to sign up for Best Buy’s Reward Zone program and get the temporary membership card before you head over to the store. As most of you are aware, Kroger is running a “stimulus promotion” giving a 10% bonus on gift cards of $300, $600 and $1200. This means if you buy a Kroger gift card worth $300, you get $30 on top of it as a bonus that goes up to $120 on a $1200 gift card. This gift can then be used at any Kroger or affiliated grocery store like Ralph’s and even Kroger gas stations.
The applicability of this promotion to gas purchases is what makes it interesting . Thanks to the bonus, here is some math that shows you the effective discounts you get just by using this gift card -
1. Base level, bonus only – 9%
2. Buying the gift card with a 5% cashback card – 13%
3. Using the gift card from #2 to buy gas – 14% (Kroger gives another 3 cents off to Kroger Plus card holders, anybody can get one at no cost)
4. If you happen to spend $100 in groceries at Kroger the previous month (as tracked on your Kroger Plus card) and hit the previous 3 conditions – 18%
So if gas is $4 per gallon and you hit all four parameters, then your effective gas price will only be $3.28 per gallon!!
If you do not have a credit card that gives 5% cash back on grocery store purchases (or have one with lower cash back), then your numbers will be affected to that extent.
In my opinion, if you have a Kroger Fuel Center near you and you shop at Kroger regularly, then this promotion is for you. The credit card won’t matter. Note that the bonus promo ends July 19 (as of now).

The Staples item number is 736601, model number is F761US. My personal preference will be to use the Intel processor, but given the typical uses this machine will see, it may not matter.
